Restaurant Review: The Mayfly, Fullerton, Hampshire
Stockbridge and the surrounding areas are a hidden gem in the beautiful Hampshire countryside - sat right on the river test and surrounded by walks and fields, it has a perfectly suited garden where visitors can sit and enjoy their meals in the serene environment.
We visited The Mayfly with Heidi a couple of weeks ago for a catch up dinner and a drink - the weather was mild and 'not raining' so obviously everyone and their dogs wanted to be outside. Sitting by the river at The Mayfly is really beautiful - you can see so much wildlife around the river: fish are jumping out of water trying to catch insects; birds have nested near by and are teaching their young all about life... It's truly adorable. Animals are also welcome at the pub - so bring along your pooches!
We settled down and got stuck in to the menus - the pub promises great food on it's website, but we actually found it very limited. Heidi is a veggie, and she basically had one option for her main that was a vegetarian cottage pie so she kind of just had to go with that; and then we decided to share a baked camembert because we both love cheese, and the menu yet again was very restricting to anyone who didn't fancy meat or fish.
The food was a standard wait - and when our camembert arrived it was very yummy! It was served with veggies, chutney, breadsticks and focaccia bread - to be honest, we probably could have had one each.
Moving on to our mains which arrived at the right time, Heidi went for her veggie cottage pie and I had the burger with sweet potato fries. My burger was good - it wasn't the best I had. I found it quite dry and the sweet potato fries were not as crunchy as I would have hoped - but the meal was still pleasant. Heidi enjoyed her veggie dish which came with bread and steamed vegetables.
Overall, it was a nice meal but for me it just wasn't as exceptional - mainly because the menu was limited in choice and the food that arrived was nice, but just not... WOW. However, the location of this pub is what makes it absolutely incredible - my verdict is definitely go and sit in the garden, grab a couple of drinks and enjoy the atmosphere. If you get peckish, grab a bit to eat!
