I'm not really into the whole 50 Shades of Grey book/movie trend, but what I have been enjoying is how creative companies have been getting with the sensual theme inspired by the book - but what intrigued and excited me the most was an invitation to review an afternoon tea inspired by 50 Shades of Grey. I was approached by The Aviator by TAG, a luxury hotel and brasserie based in Farnborough, Hampshire who invited me to try their new Guilty Pleasure Afternoon Tea inspired by the saucy book - an experience guaranteed to shock, stimulate and seduce the taste buds. Now that's an offer I simply couldn't refuse.
This was my first time visiting The Aviator and from the very beginning of entering its doors, it felt very luxurious and inviting. We were greeting by a lovely concierge who kindly took us up the famous Aviator flight of stairs (photo op!) up to the first floor Sky Bar with stunning views of the neighbouring private TAG airport so we could look into the sky and see jets take off and land.
Settling in and getting excited for the afternoon tea experience, we received our first sinful cocktail which was a mix of creamy Baileys and punchy coffee liquor. Cheers!
We then were introduced to the Jing tea served at The Aviator - specially selected blends of black, white, fruit, and herbal teas - we got to learn about the special blends and smell them before deciding which one to go for. We picked Earl Grey (because it's one of our favourites so it just had to happen!) and a black tea blend mixed by The Aviator - both of which were from tea leaves imported from India. The Earl Grey was so flavoursome with a hint of citrus so I had my cup with a slice of lemon and it was heavenly... The perfect tea to enjoy my cakes with!
Our afternoon tea arrived and we were presented with a black envelope wrapped up in satin bows - an exciting touch before we tucked in! The envelope was the menu, and steps on what to do for the ultimate pleasure experience. I think these little touches really got you excited for food, because you can't see the full menu on the website so you're not sure what to expect, and then this sexy little letter comes out with naughty food innuendos - it was brilliant!
There were certain things you had to do to your food like 'take the chocolate & Champagne gel filled love (lube) tube, carefully squeeze it over the Chantilly cream filled mini ice cream cone and eat it without using your hands...if you dare!". Now this was giggles - Heidi and I couldn't stop giggling and coming out with our own little innuendos whilst following the actions on the menu. It got messy - in the best possible way because we had chocolate and Champagne cream all over our hands and faces!
I won't ruin the surprise for you completely because I think the element of surprise and excitement is all part of the fun, but as far as afternoon tea goes this was the most fun I've had with my food in a long time! Prepare for glittery macaroons, Earl Grey tea essence, salted caramel, white and dark chocolate... Mmmmm.... And to cleanse your palette through the sweetness, there is passionfruit and dragon fruit. I strongly suggest that you enjoy this afternoon tea with a glass of champagne for extra giggles!
We also enjoyed delicious scones with clotted cream and jam, and a selection of sandwiches which were so yummy we actually had a second plate. I really enjoyed the atmosphere at The Aviator on a Sunday afternoon - it wasn't too busy so you could really relax and enjoy chatting for a couple of hours over your afternoon tea. Watching the planes fly by, slouching in the cosy leather seats, stuffing our face with chocolate - what could be better.... I have to say, this afternoon tea is quite filling so make sure you come hungry!
The Guilty Please Afternoon Tea experience is on for a limited time only, finishing at the end of March so make sure you indulge before it goes! I would suggest going with a group of girl friends because it's a right giggle with friends. If you've got an event like an engagement party, birthday, or just want a girls day out I would highly recommend visiting The Aviator for afternoon tea.
Thank you to The Aviator for inviting me to review the Guilty Pleasure Afternoon Tea - we'll be back again soon, for sure! The Aviator also has rooms to stay in, a brasserie serving delicious food, bar serving cocktails, treatments with REN, and is an events venue. So yes, we'll most certainly be back to experience more!
