Restaurant Review: The Diner, Southampton, Hampshire

Last week I was invited to join a selection of Hampshire based bloggers for an evening of authentic American dining at the newly opened Diner in Southampton's new Watermark developed located next to WestQuay. The Diner comes to Southampton from London where there are 9 locations to enjoy a delicious burger or a bucket of buffalo chicken wings - and now we can get involved without heading to the capital!
The atmosphere of The Diner is super relaxed, with atmospheric LED signs, upbeat music playing in the background, and comfortable seating - pick a booth and you can spread out after a feast!
I took my brother Max to help me try out some food, and we met Katie from www.thewhitejournal.co.uk and her boyfriend Graham who were both brilliant company and loved food as much as we did!
The staff at The Diner and friendly and helpful - all of our food came out pretty quickly, cooked as we asked for it and all of our requests were accommodated.

Now, let's crack on with talk of the food we ordered. As you can see from the photos, it was a feast of flavours, loads of cheese, and chicken that was perfection. To start had a variety of delicious options to get our hands on:

- Corn Dogs
- Bacon Jalapeño Tater Tots
- Freakshow Chicken
- Nachos
- Buttermilk Chicken with Buffalo Sauce

I love love love chicken wings so for me (and I'm pretty sure the rest of the table) Freakshow Chicken was a winner! We also loved the Buttermilk Chicken pieces - they were so tasty, and the buffalo sauce served with them was delicious. Grab a chicken basket between the two of you to share with Nachos - zesty, zingy and full of flavour. Be warned though, if you leave the nachos standing for too long, the bottom will go slightly soggy as they're dipped in to the sauces.
Now the Corn Dogs were the only things that were critiqued on the table - mainly because I don't think any of us knew what to expect from a Corn Dog, which is basically a hot dog sausage in deep friend batter. It's definitely something that you would eat once in a while, to avoid blocking your arteries!
We all also agreed that the Bacon Jalapeño Tater Tots were a delicious snack to enjoy whilst waiting for your mains, or even to accompany it.

We then ordered out mains, but I asked to keep our sides on the table too so we could carry on snacking throughout the night - which is why the table was absolutely cluttered with food! The best ever clutter to have on a table. I ordered The Diablo burger is made up of a signature 8oz burger served with crisp bacon, US cheese, and The Diner burger sauce on a Rinkoff’s smooth bun - plus I added a little bit of blue cheese on my burger to make it extra special! On the side I had a basket of french fries, and a side of Mac & Cheese which I was really looking forward to. There were also hot dogs, chicken burgers and pulled pork burgers around the table, with plenty of delicious sides to indulge in.
I really enjoyed my burger - cooked medium, the meat was tender and flavoursome, and the blue cheese and hot sauce combo (I added the hot sauce to the burger) is a favourite of mine so I was on to a winner! A good portion of skinny fries went really well with the burger, and my Mac & Cheese was yummy but I think I was very full up by the time it came to eating it so I managed to pick at it enough to make myself uncomfortably full!

After finishing our meals, we headed behind the bar to make our own milkshakes! All of the milkshakes are made on site - I tasted the Snickers milk shake which was delicious and nutty, and Max made his own super chocolatey milk shake from chocolate ice cream, malt, chocolate sauce aaaaaand I'm pretty sure there was something else in it! Oreos! That was it!

Milkshakes are pretty big at The Diner, you can easily share a shake if you're full, or just have the massive portion on your own if you're feeling like treating yo self! You can also have an alcoholic shake if you're not the designated driver that night - The Kraken sounds right up my street with rum, maple syrup and banana ice cream!

I loved the food served at The Diner in Southampton and will be back again soon - their breakfast menu sounds delish! If you love American style food and want to feast with your family or friends then this is the place to be.
