Does Your Love For Wine Do You Any Good?

I love a good wine. There is nothing better than a dry red with a rare steak, or a crisp white with seafood risotto... And for those special occasions or a sweet dessert it has to be sparkling! Although most of the time we'll pick up a bottle of wine from a local supermarket, there are those special bottles which we find when we stumble upon a vineyard, a farm shop, or a wine merchants like Corney & Barrow. Corney & Barrow are independent wine merchants with a passion for wine since 1780 and they have a wide selection of white, red, sparkling, and even vegetarian & vegan wines.

Because I love wine, I jump to defend my favourite tipple - but are there really any benefits to drinking one glass of wine with your dinner?

I was very excited to collaborate with Corney & Barrow wine merchants and try out their midweek meals wine selection - it's like a food bloggers goals! The midweek wine selection includes red, white, and sparkling wines to cater to any occasion and meal.

We are told by all media and health outlets that drinking alcohol is bad - personally, I don't drink spirits or beer, and wouldn't dream of indulging in a shot these days unless I was planning to be out of action for the whole weekend. Wine, however, is a drink I enjoy. The problem with so many people and alcohol is not knowing where the limits are - a bottle of wine over dinner is a no-no when it comes to health and weight gain, however, there has been research that having a glass of wine with dinner can bring some health benefits:

Red wine can potentially stop weight gain, prevent cancer, prevent memory loss, and help you live longer - source The Telegraph.

White wine can potentially prevent diseases and acts as an antioxidant - source Livestrong.com.

I remember I watched a programme on TV about an island or Ikarios where people live significantly longer than anywhere else in the world. They drink wine daily, and consume less animal products and more plant based food. In Crete and Sardinia, people enjoy a glass of red wine as a part of their anti-ageing routine.

So what is it in wine that can help with health benefits like the ones mentioned above? The super ingredients is: resveratrol.

So what is resveratrol, and why does it play a key part in the health benefits wine can offer? Resveratrol is made by some plants to fight off bacteria and fungi - or to withstand a drought or lack of nutrients they need to survive. Resveratrol is often found in red and purple grapes, blueberries, cranberries, peanuts, and pistachio nuts. The way resveratrol acts with other properties in wine can lead to a number of health hacks:

- Researchers at Harvard Medical School discovered that resveratrol increases the activity of sirtuins, a group of genes that protect our body from the diseases which occur during ageing;

- Resveratrol is able to create difficulty for growth of the bacteria which causes acne longer and works well with benzoyl peroxide. The interesting thing is that studies show drinking this antioxidant is the best way to benefit from properties like this - topical treatments don't work as well;

- The University of Alberta in Canada has discovered that resveratrol improves heart, brain, and bone function in the same way these parts are improved when you go to the gym! I know I'll be more motivated to do a workout session if I can have a glass of wine at the end of the day;

- Resveratrol helps to stop out-of-control blood vessel growth in the eyes, and this may help with the treatment of diabetic retinopathy, as well as age-related macular degeneration. The studies were done by Washington University School of medicine on mice, but what an exciting discovery if this was to apply to people too!

It seems that everywhere I looked, there were pros and cons to drinking wine but everybody seemed to agree - wine can be good in moderation. It's time to stop and think about how we can make our favourite tipple a part of a healthy and balanced lifestyle. I really enjoyed opening a bottle of dry red wine from Corney & Barrow to have with in-season locally caught Hampshire game; and indulging in a glass of chilled white wine with a homemade sushi platter; and we celebrated some of our achievements from the past few months with the sparkling wine which was absolutely delicious! It could easily replace champagne in my books.

The whole aura surrounding wine for me is not one of a party, get drunk and declare your love for everyone at the table; but instead a relaxed Mediterranean outlook on life - a glass or two to enjoy and indulge in with my favourite food.
