The Art Of Slow Mornings

tips on slow mornings, lifestyle bloggers, UK blog, Hampshire bloggers

The art of slow mornings - something I discovered since starting my own business and being more in control of my time. Of course there are still some mornings when I rush around like a headless chicken trying to do 50 different things I need to do before I can even think of leaving the house! But for most of the time I try to have a clam and slow morning - which is getting easier now mornings are getting lighter.

I wanted to share with you my slow morning routine, and encourage to take things easy as much as you can - stress is a big issue in many peoples lives and we need to take steps to eliminate it from our daily lives.

I love to snooze. My phone has 3 alarms - I'm not kidding. The alarms go off, I hit snooze multiple times. Which is why my alarms are set for like an hour and a half earlier than when I actually need to wake up - because I love that warm and fuzzy feeling of being half asleep with the basset snoring next to me, the sun still down, and the knowledge that I still have time to wake up before I have to get up.

I tried the whole 'don't check you phone' thing in the morning but who am I kidding? I take pleasure in scrolling my feeds as I lay in bed - I see what my friends are up to, get inspiration for the day whether that's work or play related, find events around the local area. However I don't check my emails or messages. That activity is saved until I sit in front of my laptop with a cup of coffee or green tea!

As I get ready, I love to listen to a podcast - my current favourites are the Goal Digger Podcast by Jenna Kutcher (one for the boss babes in the room!); and Lore by Aaron Mahnke (one for the horror fans, this is my absolute favourite podcast to listen to). There is also Unexplained by Richard Maclean Smith which is a close second to Lore; and Boss Girl Creative by Taylor Bradford! What podcast do you like to listen to? I need recommendations!

I love wearing big comfy clothes around the house - anything knitted always ticks the right boxes. I love this knitted off the shoulder dress which was kindly sent to me by TOBI - it's so warm, I love the colour, and it's perfect for slow mornings as well as getting out and about.

After I get ready, I pop downstair to the kitchen to make breakfast. Today I'm in the mood for something sweet.

Fig and soya milk porridge recipe

Ingredients:
1 bag of Quaker Oats (just add milk!)
200ml soya milk
2 table spoons of fig jam (mine came from my grandmother, homemade is best but you can buy in some health supermarkets!)
2/3 fresh figs

Pour in the 200ml (or if you're using different oats just check how much milk you need to use) and microwave for 2/3 minutes (again just check your oat cooking times but they're usually the same!)

Stir the oats and leave to sit for a minute or so.

Stir in the fig jam - adjust to taste! Quarter the fresh figs and add them to the mix. Voila! It really couldn't be more simple, quick, or easy to whip up a delicious breakfast.

I never used to eat breakfast, and sometimes when I'm really busy I still forget to eat something in the morning, but it makes a huge difference to productivity and weight. By starting your day with a healthy breakfast, you get much needed energy to get everything ticked off your checklist! And I noticed that there is a huge difference between having a healthy breakfast like porridge or avocado and gluten free toast; and a McDonalds muffin (shhh, we all do it sometimes!) - I feel a lot better with nutrients in my body. And water! Don't forget that nice glass of water to start the day - add a lemon or lime slice to help with digestion.

As I enjoy breakfast, I'm mentally making a list of things I need to do/achieve today. This list will carry on building through the morning - I'm yet to take the dog out for his nice countryside walk, where I will carry on building the to do list and prioritise in my head. This list will then make it on to paper once I'm at my desk - whether that's in my home office, or working with clients in their offices/studios.

I have been planning and plotting a lot of exciting things for 2018, some of which are already in motion and some are taking more planning so will probably launch in 2019. It can be difficult to find that right work/life balance, but I'm learning along the way. Work is always winning that balance, but as long as I have fun and love what I do that's great! That's a life I always wanted to build.

My Top Tips For A Slow Morning

1. Don't be afraid to hit snooze if you feel like you need an extra 10 minutes in bed!
2. Listen to a podcast or put the TV on whilst you're getting ready. Keep it relaxed.
3. Mooch to the kitchen and enjoy cooking your favourite breakfast. Then eat it at the dining table whilst thinking about the day ahead.
4. Drink a glass of water, slowly.
5. Don't check emails until you're in your working space.
6. Spend time walking outside - if you have a dog, then it's a necessity, if you don't try and get out for at least ten minutes to energise and wake up your mind and body.

How do you spend your mornings?

  1. I try hard to keep my mornings stress free and slow, but damn it every time I hit the snooze button and then I am left with no time to prepare for anything, so I just scramble around like a lunatic....Whenever I have the time though, I try to take it as slow as possible and give myself some time to do stuff for the dog, for me, for the boyfriend, and not just munch on a cigarette and go about my business :D
    I love this post!
