The Importance of Self-Care & Tips On How To Unwind

Let's take a second to talk about a selfish subject: self-care. Something that has been on my mind for a while now is the way we treat others around us: with respect, with kindness, we worry about them, and we give them good advice. But what happens if we flip this mentality around on to us?

Self-care is so important - it's true, you can't pour from an empty cup. I'm the worst culprit for this because I simply don't give myself breaks - whether it's work or social. Being my own boss means I have full control of when I work and although for some people this means less, I always do more because I love what I do and naturally I'm very career driven - my business is my baby.

But even as someone who wants to work all the time, I have realised the importance of stepping away from projects and clicking that restart button we all have. Taking regular breaks means I allow my mind to rest and work harder when I'm back in the studio. Even putting work aside, taking regular breaks from the everyday life will allow you to rest and come back to face work, family, home commitments with an invigorated soul.

Keeping self-care at the forefront of my mind this year, I wanted to share with you some of the ways I  like to unwind - from 5 minute tips, to 5 day trips.

1. Go for a walk in the countryside. Or if you live in a busy city choose a scenic park. Walking is a light form of exercise and mapping your route where nature blooms will help calm your minds. Plus think of all the fresh air! I like to take my basset out for a nice country walk after projects are finished for the day.

2. Have a cosy night with with treats. If I've had a crappy day, I like to get cosy at home in PJs, grab some of my favourite foods like pizza or nachos, put a horror film on and just switch off. I think it feels like you're in a little den hiding away for a couple of hours, which is sometimes much needed.

3. Get away for a long weekend. Honestly sometimes I just want to pack my bag and go somewhere just to get away from the everyday. It's a little harder for me to do because of my fur babies, but when I can have someone look after them for the weekend I grab the opportunity and just go. Some of my favourite places at the moment are Devon, Cornwall, and Brecon Beacons or Snowdonia in Wales. I always use AirBnB to find a cute place to stay and explore the area.

4. Learn to say no. I know this is a weird one, but trust me when you stop apologising for saying no you're going to be able to do a lot more self-care. I used to feel so bad saying 'no' to friends who were going out; or even saying 'no' to coming over for a cup of tea when I felt tired or needed some chill time. But now I listen to my mind when it's not up for something, and I'm simply not going to do anything which will make me more tired/stressed.

5. Have dinner with friends/family. Sometimes you need to vent or just talk about the things which are going on in your life and doing so with your loved ones over a cheese platter and a glass of Merlot can be just the ticket.

6. Learn to practice mindfulness. As hard as it is to clear and calm your mind, once you learn to meditate and practice mindfulness it can be a great way to relax. With so many tabs open in our mind, it's refreshing to be able to focus on something still. I found an amazing box of tools to help you along the way: read all about the Ivory Gloss box.

The bottom line is: we need to take care of ourselves the same way we take care of those around us. Be your own best friend. Learn to put yourself first. If you need a day off to sleep, take a day off to sleep - our bodies are clever mechanisms which tell us what is best at that time.
