“For those of you in the cheap seats I'd like ya to clap your hands to this one; the rest of you can just rattle your jewellery!”
― John Lennon

I have aways been curious about making my own jewellery - dabbled in the art at university and really got into making pieces with beads and charms. So much so that for Christmas one year all my friends and family received handmade jewellery - and the pieces were beautiful.
As life gets busier and business takes over, I lost a few of the hobbies which helped me stay creative and motivated - so I started thinking about creating my own jewellery for fun. The thing is, it’s been 10 years since I last made a necklace or anything of the sort so I really had no idea where to start…

I have been following Fiona from JewelleryMoves for a while on Instagram - Fiona runs jewellery pop up and at home workshops all around Hampshire, Wiltshire, and Berkshire. Her silver work looked beautiful and I kept my eye out for a workshop - but I seemed to be doomed as dates clashed with my client work. There is always a day or two that are most popular in everyones diaries, isn’t there? But after chatting to Fiona, I was delighted to be invited along to one of her silver ring workshops in Stockbridge. Hosted at Hero (an Instagrammers & boutique shoppers heaven, if you haven’t been - go) the workshop was an intimate group of women getting together to create something beautiful.

It was interesting to find out more about Fiona - JewelleryMoves was born out of a ‘moving’ lifestyle with her military husband; a brand she can take with her anywhere in the world. Although I’m not sure many things could beat her first class which was held during a sunset and fuelled by a warm Mediterranean breeze. Hand me a mojito and ship me and my laptop off to the Mediterranean islands anytime!

The whole group was very excited to make two stackable rings from silver - a complete upgrade from my beaded necklace university days. The rings Fiona showed us looked polished, stunning - I only hoped mine would resemble anything close to hers. We started off from the basics of measuring our fingers, picking our silver, and gearing up with goggles for safety.

Fuelled by tea, coffee and pastries we were ready for a morning of creativity. We had all the tools and the mastermind behind silver jewellery to help us create unique pieces which we can wear every day, with pride in the knowledge that our hands created them. I chose to make a medium silver band with a stackable ball ring, and stamped with a message on the inside of my silver band. The message I chose was ‘Believe’ - mainly because at the time and for a while I had doubts crawling in from all elements of my life - personal, work, creative, spiritual. And when you lose your belief in something, what is left? Not a lot, so I needed to remind myself to believe again.

The moment you doubt whether you can fly, you cease for ever to be able to do it.” - Peter Pan

Now, have you ever had the pressure of spelling a word right? There are certain times when you cannot get words wrong - a more common one may be when getting a tattoo, but stamping a ring is just as important. We had a few practice goes to get it wrong, and then get it right. After cutting, folding, and stamping our rings we were ready to solder them and get the size right before cooling the rings. With what looks like a creme brûlée flame torch we sealed the rings and got them hot enough to make them bigger if they needed to be. And then after a soak in a solution, the rings were ready to be taken out, washed, and polished.

I was very pleasantly surprised to see how my rings turned out - from a piece of silver to something very beautiful. With enough polishing, my rings looked professional and the little imperfections reminded me that I had made them. I sized them for my ring finger which I can wear on either hand - and they looked beautiful stacked with my engagement ring. It’s a commitment to myself to always believe and keep a positive mindset no matter what happens.
