Organic Beauty Week 2016: Skincare Routine

Through the years, we have learnt the meaning of organic and the importance organic ingredients play in our life - however, most of this knowledge came through the food industry. But what about the role organic ingredients play in beauty and skincare?

Beauty and skincare products which have been certified organic are grown without any chemicals, are GM free and any non organic ingredients used are there because there are no organic alternatives available, and they too are GM free (you can read more about organic beauty and what it means in my 2015 Organic Beauty Week post).

One of my favourite brands and one I have become very familiar with over the years is Antipodes - a New Zealand based brand which uses natural ingredients and prides itself in producing organic products which not only smell great, but also work wonders for your skin. I have been using the brand for about 2 years now and their products never fail me - the cream that got me hooked was their cult Vanilla Pod hydrating day cream. But today, in lieu of Organic Beauty Week 2016, I teamed up with Antipodes, who kindly provided samples to review within this post, to talk about the brand which produces organic skincare that is good for your skin, and your soul. So what does organic beauty mean to Antipodes?

- 100% natural ingredients
- 70 to 95% of these natural ingredients must be certified organic
- Strict international criteria govern all of the remaining ingredients

I think it passes the organic test! I love the idea of 100% natural products in skincare - no synthetics or any nasties - natural is always the best way to go, whether it's beauty, skincare or more importantly what you put into your body.

Antipodes Aura Manuka Honey mask is an intensely moisturising, cleansing and anti-oxidising treatment. It is made within the rules of a traditional remedy from the New Zealand Maori people who knew that Manuka honey powerfully draws moisture to your skin and deeply hydrates it. But it's not just the benefits of the ingredients acting with your skin - this mask is fragranced with vanilla pod and mandarin which bring peace and balance to your aura - zen.

I love my Aura mask after a long day in the city, or if I'm going to an important meeting/event - lather on a thick layer and leave to soak into your skin for 15 minutes. YUM.

Over the past year, I have been doing a lot of research and trialling on facial oils and how they impact the skin – mainly because I really could not get my head around the theory of oils being good for OILY skin. Really?

Really. Facial oils can help balance the natural oils produced by our skin, and have added benefits like reducing wrinkles, injecting nutrients and vitamins to help keep a healthy glow, and can reduce scars.

I prefer to use natural facial oils like this Antipodes Divine Face Oil which contains avocado and rosehip oils with a fragrance of sweet orange and jasmine. Avocado oil is the perfect super skin food that helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles, lines, scars and age spots.

After cleansing your face, massage the oil into your neck and face in upwards strokes – and give some love to blemishes, scars, wrinkles and any sun damaged spots (I like to stop and give them a circular massage with my index and middle finger!). You can even use it in the morning before your moisturiser and makeup – some oils make for the perfect primer believe it or not!

Body creams are just as important as facial skincare – I have to admit I usually have a love/hate relationship with body creams. Some of them feel sticky, and I hate lotions that take ages to sink into the skin – who’s got time for that in the morning?! I’m happy to report though that body and hand creams that are natural, smell gorgeous and sink into the skin with their formula full of goodness – one of these creams is the Antipodes Joyful Hand & Body Cream. I have heard SO many bloggers rave about this product and now I can see why: after trialling the product, I would totally recommend it as one of my ‘go to’ body creams.

Containing avocado oil, wild blackcurrant berry and hibiscus flower, Joyful is packed with nutrients and moisture to help your skin feel nourished, soft and de-stressed. The scent of wild blackcurrant is both sweet and earthy making it the perfect cream to wear if you want a subtle and soft scent, or if you want to spritz on some perfume after.

The perfect moisturiser for all sin types and all ages, I use Joyful daily and focus on areas that really need a ‘pick me up’ – like my shins after shaving. This moisturiser sinks in quickly, which makes it perfect for me to use in the morning when I’m rushing around trying to get out of the house, but also in the evening when after a hot bath all I’m wanting is to get into cosy PJ’s and into a snuggly blanket – without getting dog hair stuck onto my moisturiser when I snuggle on the couch. #dogownerproblems.

I would like to finish this post with a product that is such an amazing all rounder – I carry it in my bag because it honestly is a Skin Saviour. Suitable to all skin types including sensitive and irritated skin. This multi-use balm contains Vinanza Grape that is rich in antioxidants and optimises skin and cell repair; Australian tea tree and totara tree which are packed with antibacterial and antifungal properties.

This balm can be used by the whole family as it helps to tend to grazes (which aren’t specific to young kids you know – some of us are just clumsy!); nourished dry and cracked skin; moisturise chapped lips; protect your skin after shaving (this is a saviour when you need to dash out of the house!); care for your baby’s skin; reduce blemishes; treat sunburn; and basically do anything you need it to do to help your skin feel and look its best!

To use this magical balm, soften a piece in your hands and apply to clean, dry skin – you can use it on your face, body and lips and use it on skin of any age. It’s brilliant – and the best thing is that it’s natural and organic so there’s no nasties!

I hope I achieved my mission in this post and that is to show you that you can implement organic skincare into your routine – and one thing I didn’t mention is how long the products last for. I have had my Antipodes skin creams for nearly a year and I’m only reaching the bottom – a little really does go a long way! I think the reason I am such a huge fan of the brand is because their products just smell and feel great, but also because they use natural ingredients, and organic where possible, so your skin gets all the goodness and less of the synthetics.

What do you guys think – is organic skincare and beauty important to you? Do you look out for natural beauty products? Or are scientifically formulated creams the way to go? I’d love to know – leave your comments below!
